Q. What are your playstands made out of?
A. They are made out of a 13 ply, pure hardwood, plywood with a solid maple face veneer, a little like Baltic birch but smoother and stronger, with none of the awful splinters that birch plywoods can give. It is made in the U.S.A. without the use of formaldehyde glues. This stuff is twice the price of "Baltic birch," so it is no accident that my stands are a bit more expensive than some others. It should also be noted that plywood is a much more efficient use of forest resources than the use of solid lumber, since almost nothing is wasted from the tree, plus it is MUCH stronger and will not warp or bow.
Q. What do you use as a finish?
A. I use a finish called Danish wood oil, rubbed on by hand. It is a hard decision for me to choose a finish. The safer a finish is for kids, the less it stands up to them. So because I use a safe "non film" finish, my toys finish will not stand up the the kind of abuse that a dining room table will. I do not use paint of any kind, and no "film" finish (like polyurethane or lacquer) that could flake off and be ingested by a child. The fact is there is no perfect finish that is both durable, waterproof, safe for the planet, and safe for children. Most playstands are sold "unfinished" for this very reason. What that does is saddle the buyer with a sort of messy job and the same tough decision the I have had to make. Long story short, I have chosen a finish that is safe for a child but not very protective in a rainstorm. The nice thing about an oil finish is that a stain or a scratch can be easily repaired by a little sanding and a fresh rub of oil. Sort of like a cutting board. Q. How much does it cost to ship a pair of playstands?
A. I can ship a pair of playstands with arches almost anywhere in the continental U.S. for around $38.00. My stands are thick, solid, and strong and unfortunately it means my box weighs about 55 lbs. If you order the package deal or a lot of accessories, I have to send another box and that is usually about another $20.00. I wish my website was a bit more advanced so I could do a better job with shipping quotes. If you feel the shipping cost on your order is not accurate, then please contact me and I will give you a more exact quote based on your address.
